Mother’s Bistro, Portland
Mother, Grandmother, Chef, Entrepreneur, World-Traveler, Survivor, and Cookbook Author Lisa Schroeder is the driving force behind Mother’s Bistro & Bar, an inviting restaurant at the corner of Stark and 2nd Avenue in downtown Portland.
Crystal chandeliers, pale yellow and sage green bead board, white cabinets, and polished pine tables create a cheerful shabby chic ambience. If you’re lucky with the weather, morning sunlight will make the room glow. Hints of “Mom” around the place add comfort and humor. My Mom and I especially liked the sign at the entrance reading “Be Nice or Leave” and the “call your mother” reminder on the coffee mugs
…while the kids loved the sunny little play area complete with toys and a window seat where Grandma could read them a book.
One especially lovely tribute is found when you open the menu is the “Mother of the Month” page featuring somebody’s beloved Mother and her life story. Her family recipes and her heritage influence the menu offerings each month — what a nice touch!
Traditional breakfast fare is spiced up here with inventive twists like poppy seeds and almond in the pancakes and Migas (eggs scrambled with corn tortilla strips and topped with spicy salsa) rather than the usual Huevos Rancheros. There is a small affordable kid’s menu but plenty of things on the grown-up menu are perfect for kids too. Mine opted for bagels with cream cheese and shared a smoothie (the waitress suggested they split one = more evidence that they are kind to mothers at this fine establishment).
Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Served. Closed Mondays. 212 Southwest Stark Street Portland, OR 97204 (503) 464-1122
